Children love sugar. Who are we kidding? We all love sugar. Unfortunately, sugar promotes cavity growth. So, it’s important to limit sugar consumption as much as possible. To help you limit sugar intake for your child, our dentist, Dr. Vivian Hudson, has some tips and information for you.
First, you should provide more foods that have less sugar. All you need to do is stick to the basics, which are meats, fruits, and vegetables. These foods don’t have high amounts of sugar, they can help the teeth, and they can make your child feel more satisfied! So, stock your house with these foods instead of sugary treats and snacks.
Second, you should make healthier snacks. This doesn’t mean you should quit making snacks, treats, and desserts. It just means you should make them a little healthier by substituting sugar with a different ingredient (like honey or nectar) or by using less sugar than what the recipe calls for.
Third, you should give your child sugar on occasion rather than all the time. So, try to save the treats for birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. However, this might be difficult at first, so try small goals at first, like only giving your child a sugary treat every other day or only once a week.
